23V099000 · Electrical System:Software | Visibility:Power Window Devices And Controls

Reported: 2023-02-17 (February 17, 2023)

BMW of North Americal, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2023 8 Series Coupe (840i, 840i xDrive, M850i xDrive, M8), 8 Series Convertible (840i, 840i xDrive, M850i xDrive, M8), 8 Series Gran Coupe (840i, 840i xDrive, M850i xDrive, M8, Alpine B8 xDrive), 2 Series Coupe (230i, 230i xDrive, M240i xDrive, M2), and 2022-2023 Z4 sDrive30i, Z4 M40i vehicles. When the digital key is removed from the vehicle, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) software may still allow the power windows and sunroof to be closed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 118, "Power-operated Window Systems."

Consequence: Unintentionally closing the windows or sunroof without the key present can increase the risk of injury to occupants inside the vehicle.

Remedy: Dealers will update the software for the Electronic Control Unit (ECU), free of charge. In addition, the digital key function via cellular service and Wi-Fi capability will be deactivated until the vehicle is updated with new software. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed April 11, 2023. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

25V644000 · Electrical System:Starter Assembly

Reported: 2025-09-25 (September 25, 2025)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020 340I, X6, 2020-2025 840I, 2020-2022 740LI, 2019-2020 X7, and X5 vehicles. After repeated attempts, the starter motor may overheat from an electrical overload.

Consequence: An overheated starter motor can ignite nearby combustible material in the engine compartment, increasing the risk of a fire.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the engine starter, free of charge. This recall includes vehicles repaired under recall 24V576 and those owners will need to have their vehicle repaired again. Owner notification letters were mailed February 9, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov November 17, 2025.

26V525000 · Power Train:Driveline:Driveshaft

Reported: 2026-08-12 (August 12, 2026)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2022-2026 840i, 840i xDrive, 2021-2023 540i, 540i xDrive, M550i xDrive, and 2024-2026 750e xDrive vehicles. The connection between the driveshaft and the rear differential may become damaged, possibly resulting in a loss of power to the rear wheels or a vehicle rollaway.

Consequence: An unexpected loss of drive power can increase the risk of a crash. In addition, a damaged driveshaft can result in a vehicle rollaway if the parking brake is not applied, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the connection between the driveshaft and rear axle differential, and apply adhesive or replace the driveshaft and rear axle differential, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 2, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417. My vehicle mileage was about 50,000 miles and well maintained by BMW dealership in my area. I was driving to work when suddenly my vehicle alerted me to a fault on display panel showing a power supply fault. The message said i should stop driving and call roadside assistance. The vehicle was towed to BMW dealership. There were no prior warnings or messages or symptoms in relations to this fault. The dealership confirmed that the water pump failed, and caused the drive belt to dislodge, also caused the alternator to malfunction and eventually da…

The Gear Shift area flawed design and defective assembly allows fluid spill to short out transmission and shifting ability. Assembly is not sealed correctly which allows a spilled fluid to leak through the gearshift on and into the the GWS. The GWS was not sealed causing a short in the the assembly & the need for its replacement at substantial cost to the owner. The drink holder is place next to gearshift area with no consideration that spilled fluid will cause the car to shut down and the GWS replacement. 06/21/2022

Safety was compromised by drivetrain instability and a federal recall involving a starter motor defect that poses a fire risk. Despite this, BMW of Arlington has refused to authorize repairs or allow BMW of Austin to complete the necessary work, even after a $13,565 drivetrain failure diagnosis. On October 4, 2025, our 2022 BMW 840i became inoperable due to worn splines in the rear differential and drive shaft. BMW of Austin confirmed the failure was consistent with prior service-induced damage. The component is available for inspection. The iss…

Drive Shaft Failed a second time within a year. This time they are saying the Differential stripped it this time. Both incidents i was on highway and car completed stalled out of the randomly no warning or alerts both times on interstate. BMW just provided services to my car i had front brakes replaced, oil change and open recall of starter repaired. Everything checked out to be good along with drive shaft and differential. Now they need replaced per BMW.

THE NAVIGATION WILL STATE THE PLACE THAT YOU ARE PHYSICALLY LOCATED ACCURATELY. FOR EXAMPLE WHEN I WAS AT BMW IN DELRAY BEACH FL THE NAVIGATION TELLS YOU THAT YOU ARE AT THE LOCATION. WHEN YOU PUT IN THE ADDRESS WHERE THE CAR IS PHYSICALLY LOCATED TO NAVIGATE TO, INSTEAD OF SAYING THAT YOU HAVE REACHED YOUR DESTINATION. THE NAVIGATION WILL TAKE YOU MILES AWAY AND SAY THAT YOU HAVE REACHED YOUR DESTINATION. THIS IS CLEARLY A SAFETY ISSUE AS THIS CAN TAKE YOU INTO A RIVER, BOAT RAMP AND OR PLACE YOU IN A DANGEROUS SITUATION. DELRAY BMW IN FL…

THE LANE KEEPING DRIVING ASSISTANCE/DRIVING ASSISTANCE PRO ON THE 2020 BMW 840I GRAN COUPE PRODUCES A SUDDEN LOUD "BARK" WHEN THE ASSISTANCE SYSTEM LOSES SIGHT OF THE LANE MARKERS. THAT OFTEN HAPPENS IN INTERSECTIONS BUT CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE WHERE THE LANE MARKERS ARE WORN. I BOUGHT THE CAR ON 2/29/2020 AND IT HAS HAPPENED MANY TIMES SINCE THEN AND NOT ONLY ON THE DATE SHOWN. THE SUDDEN LOUD "BARK" IS A DISTRACTION, A NUISANCE AND TOTALLY UNNECESSARY SINCE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ALSO HAS A LARGE DISPLAY SHOWING THE STATUS OF THE DRIVING ASSISTANCE…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
