Owner report 11500375 · 2023-01-05 (January 5, 2023)

I was driving down the highway, doing the speed limit, when my moonroof suddenly exploded. Luckily, the shade was drawn. But, if it had been open, I could have been seriously injured. There was no projectile, nothing fell and hit the window. On inspection of the roof after I safely made it home, the glass was bowing upward. Prior to the incident, the appearance of the glass was completely normal - ie. no scratches, dings, cracks. There was no indication that something might be wrong with the glass.

Recall history

2 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

20V666000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Fuel Injection System

Reported: 2020-10-29 (October 29, 2020)

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 M2 Coupe and 2020 M4 Coupe vehicles. Fuel injectors may have been installed without a damping component which is used to reduce vibration. If a damping component is not present, vibration will increase at the connection between the fuel line and the fuel rail, which over time, can result in damage at the connection.

Consequence: A damaged connection between the fuel line and the fuel rail could lead to a fuel leak and, in the presence of an ignition source, increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel injectors and if a damping component is missing, the injectors and the fuel rail will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

THE BACKLIGHTING FOR THE TACHOMETER AND SPEEDOMETER BECOMES COMPLETELY UNREADABLE UNDER SOFT DAYLIGHT SITUATIONS. AN EXAMPLE OF THIS WOULD BE DRIVING THROUGH A WOODED AREA IN FULL DAYLIGHT. IT APPEARS THAT THIS ISSUE IS CREATED BE TWO ISSUES. FIRST, THE COLOR OF THE BACKGROUND AND LETTERING ON THE GAUGES THEMSELVES DO NOT CREATE ENOUGH CONTRASTING. SECOND, THE AMBIENT LIGHT SENSOR DOES NOT APPEAR TO PICK UP WHEN THIS SITUATION IS HAPPENING AND ENGAGE THE BACKLIGHTING FOR THE CONSOLE. THIS ISSUE MAKES IT VERY HARD, OR IMPOSSIBLE, TO DETERM…

FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS IN EVERY SNOWSTORM, THIS HAS BECOME A PROBLEM. THE HEADLIGHTS BECOME BUILT UP WITH SNOWPACK AND WILL NOT MELT DUE TO THE EFFICIENCY OF THE LED BULBS NOT PRODUCING ENOUGH HEAT. I'VE TRIED USING THE WASHER FLUID SPRAYERS EVERY FEW MINUTES TO STOP BUILD UP, BUT ALL IT DOES IS KEEP THE TURN SIGNAL AREA CLEAN, TESTED MULTIPLE DIFFERENT WASHER FLUIDS AS EXTREME AS I CAN FIND, EVEN MIXING MY OWN WASHER FLUID UP MADE OF 50% METHANOL AND 50% ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL. The charge pipe, connecting the cold side of the intercooler to the throttle body failed without warning. The failure point was the clamping point to secure the pipe to the throttle body. This vehicle has no powertrain modifications. The failure happened all of a sudden and as a result, my vehicle lost all power. Luckily, there wasn't anyone behind my car when this happened, but this could have easily been a big safety issue had I been merging onto a freeway/taking a left turn. I have not gotten the issue inspected by the dealer. The failure…

I was driving on a highway accelerating to merge to left lane when suddenly my charge pipe exploded and my vehicle lost almost all power. The sudden power loss put me in extreme danger as I tried to pull back over to the nearest exit with traffic zooming past me. After doing some research it became apparent that this is a long known issue. In fact bmw has redesigned the charge pipe with a new, more robust version but no recall has been issued to date and I'm stuck with over a thousand dollars of repairs as the pipe did additional damage to adja…

Stock OEM right rear spring on 2021 BMW M2 Competition F87 had snapped in two back in August 2023. Vehicle only has about $10,000 miles. Online forums also had online users with the same problem where OEM rear springs snapping on either side. Users also stated that vehicles were parked and springs suddenly snapped. The OEM coil springs should be looked into as this poses danger and safety for the driver especially if these incidents occurred on highway speeds.

The electronic parking brake of my vehicle with a manual transmission released automatically simply because the clutch pedal was depressed and released. I did not select a gear, press the brake pedal, or press the accelerator pedal. The parking brake should not be releasing simply by actuating the clutch. There is nothing to stop the vehicle from rolling. This behavior is repeatable and has happened in more than one place.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
