Recall history

6 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

16V653000 · Structure:Frame And Members

Reported: 2016-09-09 (September 9, 2016) · Model years: 2016

BMW North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016 BMW M2 Coupe vehicles, 2015-2017 M3 Sedan vehicles and 2015-2016 M4 Coupe and M4 Convertible vehicles. During servicing of the rear differential for a prior service action, the rear sub-frame bolts may have been reused instead of being replaced. Reuse of the existing bolts may cause the bolts to loosen.

Consequence: Loose rear sub-frame bolts may adversely affect vehicle handling and control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear sub-frame bolts with new bolts, free of charge. The recall began on November 3, 2016. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

17V719000 · Electrical System: Instrument Cluster/Panel

Reported: 2017-11-15 (November 15, 2017) · Model years: 2018

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2018 230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, M240i xDrive, M2, and X3 xDrive 30i SAV vehicles. These vehicles may have an error in the software for the instrument panel, causing the display to not properly illuminate. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 101, "Control and Displays."

Consequence: If the display does not illuminate during start up or does not illuminate various control and warning symbols while driving, it can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will update the instrument cluster display software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 8, 2018. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

19V352000 · Air Bags:Knee Bolster

Reported: 2019-05-09 (May 9, 2019) · Model years: 2019, 2020

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2019-2020 230i, 230i xDrive, M240i, M240i xDrive, M2 Competition Coupe, 430i, 430i xDrive, 440i, 440i xDrive, M4, and 2019 330i xDrive Sportswagon vehicles. The driver and passenger knee air bag assemblies may have been improperly folded and assembled.

Consequence: An improperly folded and assembled air bag may not deploy as intended, increasing risk of injury.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the knee air bag modules, free of charge. The recall began July 8, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

20V666000 · Fuel System, Gasoline:Fuel Injection System

Reported: 2020-10-29 (October 29, 2020) · Model years: 2020, 2021

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2020-2021 M2 Coupe and 2020 M4 Coupe vehicles. Fuel injectors may have been installed without a damping component which is used to reduce vibration. If a damping component is not present, vibration will increase at the connection between the fuel line and the fuel rail, which over time, can result in damage at the connection.

Consequence: A damaged connection between the fuel line and the fuel rail could lead to a fuel leak and, in the presence of an ignition source, increase the risk of a fire.

Remedy: BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the fuel injectors and if a damping component is missing, the injectors and the fuel rail will be replaced, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2020. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

The passenger seat belt Automatic Locking Retractor (ALR) may deactivate early, before the webbing fully retracts. As such, these assemblies fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."

Consequence: During a crash, a seat belt retractor that does not function as intended increases the risk of injury.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractors (including the seat belts) and, if necessary, replace the retractors, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on September 3, 2021. FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS IN EVERY SNOWSTORM, THIS HAS BECOME A PROBLEM. THE HEADLIGHTS BECOME BUILT UP WITH SNOWPACK AND WILL NOT MELT DUE TO THE EFFICIENCY OF THE LED BULBS NOT PRODUCING ENOUGH HEAT. I'VE TRIED USING THE WASHER FLUID SPRAYERS EVERY FEW MINUTES TO STOP BUILD UP, BUT ALL IT DOES IS KEEP THE TURN SIGNAL AREA CLEAN, TESTED MULTIPLE DIFFERENT WASHER FLUIDS AS EXTREME AS I CAN FIND, EVEN MIXING MY OWN WASHER FLUID UP MADE OF 50% METHANOL AND 50% ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL. The charge pipe, connecting the cold side of the intercooler to the throttle body failed without warning. The failure point was the clamping point to secure the pipe to the throttle body. This vehicle has no powertrain modifications. The failure happened all of a sudden and as a result, my vehicle lost all power. Luckily, there wasn't anyone behind my car when this happened, but this could have easily been a big safety issue had I been merging onto a freeway/taking a left turn. I have not gotten the issue inspected by the dealer. The failure…

I was driving on a highway accelerating to merge to left lane when suddenly my charge pipe exploded and my vehicle lost almost all power. The sudden power loss put me in extreme danger as I tried to pull back over to the nearest exit with traffic zooming past me. After doing some research it became apparent that this is a long known issue. In fact bmw has redesigned the charge pipe with a new, more robust version but no recall has been issued to date and I'm stuck with over a thousand dollars of repairs as the pipe did additional damage to adja…

Stock OEM right rear spring on 2021 BMW M2 Competition F87 had snapped in two back in August 2023. Vehicle only has about $10,000 miles. Online forums also had online users with the same problem where OEM rear springs snapping on either side. Users also stated that vehicles were parked and springs suddenly snapped. The OEM coil springs should be looked into as this poses danger and safety for the driver especially if these incidents occurred on highway speeds.

I was driving down the highway, doing the speed limit, when my moonroof suddenly exploded. Luckily, the shade was drawn. But, if it had been open, I could have been seriously injured. There was no projectile, nothing fell and hit the window. On inspection of the roof after I safely made it home, the glass was bowing upward. Prior to the incident, the appearance of the glass was completely normal - ie. no scratches, dings, cracks. There was no indication that something might be wrong with the glass.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

The electronic parking brake of my vehicle with a manual transmission released automatically simply because the clutch pedal was depressed and released. I did not select a gear, press the brake pedal, or press the accelerator pedal. The parking brake should not be releasing simply by actuating the clutch. There is nothing to stop the vehicle from rolling. This behavior is repeatable and has happened in more than one place.
