Owner report 11577781 · 2024-03-16 (March 16, 2024)

The auto start/stop on this car is super slow and will turn off the engine before the car comes to a complete stop. It causes confusion at intersections because of the slow getaway and has nearly caused several collisions. For instance, last week I was turning left at an intersection. The left turn was a yield, so i am turning across oncoming traffic. This is the usual intersection in my city. I did not come to a complete stop and started to turn left. I left plenty of space to the oncoming traffic. To my surprise, the engine had turned …

The BMW 2024 X1 comes with the new iDrive9 that has eliminated most of the physical controls. Now there is a large touch screen that controls the radio, HVAC, Apple Car Play, cruise control, head lights, heated seats, etc. The driver has to keep looking at the screen to find the touch buttons to control all the operation functions of the car. Texting while driving is dangerous; well with the iDrive9, one is texting on steroids!!! This system is nothing short of dangerous. It is so bad, I got rid of the car after owning it for 7 months. Owner report 11604772 · 2024-07-26 (July 26, 2024)

Traveling about 35mph with no cars around, the brakes applied, no throttle response, and little steering. Warning lights illuminated and couldn't move car until turned off ignition and restarted. Dealer showed no codes and shows no record of it occurring. This symptom mirrors a recall on last years model, but not yet on 2024's. BMW says there's nothing more they can do but we are afraid to drive car because it's a guaranteed accident waiting to happen.

Owner report 11606349 · 2024-08-04 (August 4, 2024)

The auto start software will turn the engine off when the car is still rolling. I can be rolling 2-4 MPH and the engine will just turn off. There’s a huge delay after the engine restarts for power to continue. There is no way to permanently turn off this feature. If you are making a left turn across traffic you can be in a situation where the car will allow you to roll into oncoming traffic with the engine off. And as you press the gas nothing happens. It happens randomly so there’s no way to “learn” how the car behaves and anticipate it. I…

Owner report 11614710 · 2024-09-15 (September 15, 2024)

I am a new owner of a BMW X1. The design of the 2024 vehicle is problematic. I also own a 2022 BMW X3, that car is fine. This X1 has an infotainment system much like a Tesla and it creates a distracted driving situation. For example to deactivate that feature, which I do 100% of the time, that causes the stopped car to shut off takes one button press in the X3, in the X1 it takes 3. I have to press a button, find the deactivate on the screen then select the media button to go back to the radio. The whole time I am looking away or I have a pass…

Please refer to NHTSA recall 24V104. BMW (and NHTSA) have known about this safety issue for 7 months or more. Yet, BMW has done absolutely nothing to resolve the problem. What is it going to take to get BMW to place a reasonable priority on this? Deaths? Severe accidents? The recall was issued 2/12/24. It is now 10/2/24. I continue to drive a vehicle affected by the recall. I do not feel safe and feel BMW needs to address this issue without further delay. I have emailed BMW customer service seeking updates and they won't even respond!…

3 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

24V104000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Power Assist:Electric:Control Module | Electronic Stability Control (Esc)

Reported: 2024-02-12 (February 12, 2024)

BMW of North America, LLC. (BMW) is recalling certain 2023-2025 BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce vehicles. Please see the recall report for a complete list of models and model years. The integrated brake (IB) system may malfunction and result in a loss of power brake assist or cause the Antilock Brake (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) systems to not function properly.

Consequence: A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle. Additionally, malfunctioning ABS and/or DSC systems can cause a loss of vehicle control. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will replace the integrated brake system, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed between June and December 2024. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Rolls Royce customer service at 1-877-877-3735.

The welds in the servomotor of the integrated brake control module may break, causing a loss of power brake assist and rear brake function. In addition, the Antilock Brake System (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system may not function.

Consequence: A loss of brake power assist or rear brake function can result in extended stopping distance. A loss of ABS or DSC can cause a loss of vehicle handling and control. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

My Moonroof shade gets stuck when I try to open and close it. This has been a huge problem among other BMW X1s and it is over $2,000 to fix! This has caused a lot of issues in my car. Thousands of other drivers have also reported this issue. It is not safe having my shade stuck since people can see into my car, and the sun shines which will eventually ruin my leather.

On November 18, 2022, around 9:45 a.m. on Rt. 462 in South Carolina. I was driving my 2021 BMW X1 when “boom.” I thought I’d been shot at with a shotgun. I nearly lost control of the car. As it turns out, by sunroof exploded. (See attached photo). My BMW dealer is covering it under warranty, but I thought I should let NHTSA know. It has been replaced, so inspection is not an option. Incident occurred on 9-15-26 at approx. 1:16 PM (PST) and 6205 miles. Vehicle uncontrollably rolled/moved opposite to the selected drive gear while waiting for the clutch to engage. Had stopped on a flat paved road to allow a pedestrian to cross by, but when I released the brake pedal, the vehicle unexpectedly moved backwards immediately - despite being in drive gear. Had to slam on brakes to stop this. Fortunately, no vehicle was behind me otherwise could have collided. No warning messages, etc. prior to this incident.

While visiting BMW of Alexandria, an approved BMW dealership, I was told that BMW vehicles have an issue where running it through a safe, approved inside car wash when it's below 40 degrees Fahrenheit outside is dangerous. Parts break, glass shatters, it's just dangerous. Not believing that, I sent the question to BMW of USA customer care. They had a case manger, Jake, call me today. He stated that is theoretically possible for a BMW. When I said it's scary that my kids, my wife, could be in the vehicle when parts shattered or exploded, hi…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

On [XXX] we were headed to Myrtle Beach, a warning lite came on the dash to go straight to the dealer. Later when we got home, my wife called the dealer and set up an appointment. At that time the service department said that BMW didn't have a solution to the problem and told us to wait until we received a text or call to have the X1 BMW serviced. We got a letter in August that the remedy is available and carried it to the dealer. The service department then told us that the part was not there for our car and it was in transit. Also the part ha…

While reversing into a parking space, the parking sensor system repeatedly indicated an obstacle on the left side of the vehicle even though no object was present. The system displayed a red warning on the left side and automatically applied the brakes very suddenly, causing the vehicle to jerk to a stop. I exited the vehicle to check the area and confirmed there was nothing on the ground or near the vehicle that would explain the warning. The surface was flat and clear. Because the system continued to detect a phantom obstacle on the left side…

On 2/25/26, in rush hour traffic we were driving on a NJ highway. We happened to be in the left-most of 3 lanes with a concrete divider (no shoulder – there was about 3 ft between the concrete divider and the left side of the left lane). We were about 4 car lengths behind the next car when traffic was slowing for a red light. The car indicated “Everything OK”. When I hit my brakes, they did not engage; they locked. The car skidded; it felt like we were on ice, but the road was clear. We were upon the car in front of us and had no place to go. …
