23V094000 · Seat Belts:Front | Seat Belts:Pretensioner

Reported: 2023-02-16 (February 16, 2023)

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Genesis GV80, 2021-2023 Genesis G80, 2022-2023 Genesis GV70, and 2023 Genesis GV60 vehicles. In the event of a crash, the front driver-side and/or passenger-side seat belt pretensioners may explode upon deployment.

Consequence: An exploding seat belt pretensioner can project metal fragments into the vehicle, strike vehicle occupants, and result in injury.

Remedy: Dealers will secure the seat belt pretensioners with a cap, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 14, 2023. For GV60 owners, Interim notification letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed April 14, 2023. A second notice will be sent once the final remedy is available. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 012G. This recall supersedes and expands recall number 21V-796. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 21V-796 will need to have the new remedy completed.

Customer/Client is told to deal with the Engineering dept. at Genesis Corporate and it is out of the hands of the dealer. The software effects a lot of moving parts and safety features within vehicle, I feel the vehicle cannot be trusted. No one follows up from dealer to National Customer Service for the brand. The vehicle's automatic start/stop feature had been manually disabled. Total battery system failure to where vehicle would not start/restart, or if started via jumping, would stall out shortly thereafter. Battery problem to point to where jump starting is difficult due to shorted battery lowering availalble power to start/restart engine. This could have caused unexpected removal of power from the vehcile during traveling or in unsafe areas. This appears to be a very common problem with this vehicle as seen on various online forums and lack of part (battery) availability.

The electrical wiring harnesses affecting numerous safety systems (forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning) have been chewed through by rodents. Upon further research it was determined that starting in 2016 Asian automotive manufacturers (Nissan, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai) began using soy-based insulation in their wiring harnesses as alternatives to petroleum-based insulation. Rodents (mice, squirrels, etc.) are attracted to the wiring harnesses. The resultant damage and safety concerns led customers to file s…

The Engine Control Module (ECM) malfunctioned. The dealer replaced it with a new one. When it malfunctioned, the car would not accelerate to a speed greater than 20mph. This was dangerous because I was driving on a state highway where the speed limit is 55mph, and I could have been rear-ended. Since having the ECM replaced, the car's performance has been fine.
