02V276004 · Equipment:Recreational Vehicle/Trailer

Reported: 2002-11-15 (November 15, 2002)

CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES EQUIPPED WITH NORCOLD REFRIGERATOR COOLING UNITS MODEL NUMBERS 442, 443, 452, EV452, 453, 462, EV462, 463, EV463, 482, EV482, 483, EV483, 874, AND 875 MANUFACTURED BETWEEN JANUARY 1987 AND MAY 1995. THESE REFRIGERATORS CAN EXPERIENCE A BREAK DOWN IN A RUBBER SEAL WITHIN THE GAS VALVE. AS THE RUBBER SEAL AGES, A LEAK MAY OCCUR, ALLOWING PROPANE GAS TO ACCUMULATE IN THE BURNER AREA.

Consequence: THE CONSEQUENCE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE, POSSIBLY CAUSING SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH.

Remedy: NORCOLD WILL NOTIFY ITS CUSTOMERS AND PROVIDE A REPLACEMENT GAS VALVE FREE OF CHARGE. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT NORCOLD SERVICE CENTER AT 1-800-667-3005.

I WAS TRAVELING E/B ON I 40 WEST OF THE ARIZONA STATE LINE IN MY 2000, 30' MAVERICK MOTORHOME. I WAS DRIVING ABOUT 60 MPH, WITH FACTORY INSTALLED FIRESTONE STEELTEX R4S LT 225/75R16 TIRES, WHEN THE RIGHT REAR INSIDE TIRE BLEW WITH TOTAL TREAD SEPARATION. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND OBSERVED A LARGE HOLE IN THE STORAGE COMPARTMENT TO THE REAR OF THE TIRE, A BENT TAIL PIPE, AND DAMAGE TO THE OUTSIDE COMPARTMENT DOOR. ALL TIRES APPEARED TO BE IN EXCELLENT CONDITION PRIOR TO THE BLOWOUT. ALSO, TIRES WERE REGULARLY CHECKED FOR RECOMMENDED TIRE …

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
