A WEEK AGO (4/5/08) WHILE RIDING MY RURAL MOTORCYCLE ( 2007 TOURIST), I HEARD A LOUD CLICK, CLICK, KLUNK!!! AND THEN THE REAR WHEEL MOMENTARILY FROZE WITH SOME GRINDING AND SCRAPING NOISES. CLICK CLICK KLUNK NOISE SEEMED TO HAVE EMITTED FROM THE CENTER OF THE MOTOR CYCLE AROUND THE MAIN TRANSMISSION AREA. I STOPPED THE MOTORCYCLE AND COULD DETERMINE NO DAMAGE UPON A SIMPLE VISUAL INSPECTION. I TESTED RIDING AND THE BIKE RESUMED WITH OUT PROBLEM. Recall history

1 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

07V372000 · Power Train:Automatic Transmission

Reported: 2007-08-22 (August 22, 2007)

ON CERTAIN MOTORCYCLES BUILT WITH A SIDECAR AND EQUIPPED WITH HERZOG TRANSMISSION GEAR SETS, THE TRANSMISSION MAIN SHAFT IS OUTSIDE OF ACCEPTABLE TOLERANCE DUE TO INCORRECT MANUFACTURING OF TRANSMISSION MAIN SHAFT AND SPECIFIC RETAINING CLIPS. THE MAIN SHAFT AND RETAINING CLIPS MAY BE DEFECTIVE.

Consequence: TRANSMISSION DAMAGE, EXCESSIVE GEAR WEAR, HARD SHIFTING, AND POSSIBLE FAILURE CAN OCCUR RESULTING IN REAR WHEEL LOCK UP INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: THE MOTORCYCLES WILL BE INSPECTED AND IF THE TRANSMISSION HAS DEFECTIVE SHAFTS AND RETAINING CLIPS, THE COMPLETE TRANSMISSION WILL BE REPLACED FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JULY 24, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT IRBIT AT 1-888-990-8484.

Fortunately I discovered this while the bike was parked. I was getting ready to go for a ride when I noticed that the front tire was flat. Upon further investigation I noticed the wheel had cracked all the way around wheel and caused the valve stem to be ripped from the inner tube. I also noticed that the rear wheel was cracking in the same exactly manner. The sidecar wheel looks intact. Ural had recalled their wheels for April of 2012 for the same reason.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
