In 2015 purchased this used 2012 Ural GearUp (Yamal edition) from GOAz Motorcycles in Scottsdale, AZ. To date I have received no written notice from GOAz or Irbit of the safety recall related to cracking/defective rims. I only learned of this 2 days ago through a newsletter E-Mail from Ural USA. These rims have been the subject of two NHTSA recalls: [XXX] (2013) and [XXX] (2022). When I had new tires put on the bike last month I noticed the rim on the sidecar wheel had hairline cracks throughout the inner diameter and one of the spoke bays …

Recall history

1 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

13V507000 · Wheels:Rim

Reported: 2013-10-17 (October 17, 2013)

Irbit Motorworks of America, Inc. (Irbit) is recalling certain model year 2012 Ural Gear-up, Patrol, Patrol T, Tourist, and Tourist T motorcycles with sidecars produced June 2, 2012, through October 25, 2012. The aluminum rims manufactured in April 2012 were improperly heat treated which could result in cracked, split or broken rims.

Consequence: The failure of a rim may result in a wheel lock up, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Irbit will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the motorcycles and replace any aluminum rims manufactured in April 2012, free of charge. The recall began on November 2013. Owners may contact Irbit Motorworks at 1-425-702-8484.

Fortunately I discovered this while the bike was parked. I was getting ready to go for a ride when I noticed that the front tire was flat. Upon further investigation I noticed the wheel had cracked all the way around wheel and caused the valve stem to be ripped from the inner tube. I also noticed that the rear wheel was cracking in the same exactly manner. The sidecar wheel looks intact. Ural had recalled their wheels for April of 2012 for the same reason.

A WEEK AGO (4/5/08) WHILE RIDING MY RURAL MOTORCYCLE ( 2007 TOURIST), I HEARD A LOUD CLICK, CLICK, KLUNK!!! AND THEN THE REAR WHEEL MOMENTARILY FROZE WITH SOME GRINDING AND SCRAPING NOISES. CLICK CLICK KLUNK NOISE SEEMED TO HAVE EMITTED FROM THE CENTER OF THE MOTOR CYCLE AROUND THE MAIN TRANSMISSION AREA. I STOPPED THE MOTORCYCLE AND COULD DETERMINE NO DAMAGE UPON A SIMPLE VISUAL INSPECTION. I TESTED RIDING AND THE BIKE RESUMED WITH OUT PROBLEM. THEN LAST NIGHT , (04/13/08)THE SAME INCIDENT HAPPENED, CLICK, CLICK, KLUNK AND REAR WHEEL…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.

Incident date is preferred when valid and no later than filing; otherwise filing date is used. Model year approximates age. Equal observation time does not adjust for sales, distance driven or reporting delays. One complaint linked to multiple model years can appear in each cohort.
