Reported: 1999-10-12 (October 12, 1999) · Model years: 1999
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: MOTORCYCLES. THE SPRING IN THE CAM CHAIN TENSION ADJUSTER CAN BREAK ALLOWING THE CAM CHAIN TO JUMP TO THE WRONG POSITION ON THE CAM SHAFT SPROCKETS. IF THE CHAIN JUMPS TO THE WRONG POSITION, SEVERE ENGINE DAMAGE COULD OCCUR CAUSING SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE.
Consequence: SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE COULD CAUSE THE REAR WHEEL TO LOCKUP, DISTURBING THE RIDER'S ABILITY TO CONTROL THE MOTORCYCLE.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE ORIGINAL CAM CHAIN TENSION ADJUSTER WITH A REVISED CAM CHAIN TENSION ADJUSTER.

I HAVE A 2002 HAYABUSA MOTORCYCLE. ABOUT A MONTH AGO WHEN ATTEMPTING TO START THE BIKE THE STARTER GEAR WOULD SLIP AND I WOULD HEAR AN ABNORMALLY LOUD CLANKING SOUND. FINALLY, I ATTEMPTED TO START THE BIKE AND THE STARTER WOULD NOT ENGAGE, (JUST SPINNING UP). I HAD TO HAVE THE BIKE TOWED ($75) TO THE DEALER WHO IS AWARE OF THE ISSUE. WHEN I CALLED SUZUKI USA THEY REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE ISSUE. AFTER SOME RESEARCH I DISCOVERED THAT THE ISSUE IS DISCUSSED IN TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 126 ISSUED BY SUZUKI. THEY WILL UPGRADE THE STARTER GE…

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.
This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.
No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
