DT: HARLEY DAVIDSON 2005 FLSTSCI - SPRINGER CLASSIC. THERE IS A LOT OF WHEEL WOBBLE DUE TO A BENT FRONT RIM. CONSUMER UNKNOWINGLY BOUGHT THE MOTORCYCLE WITH A BENT FRONT RIM. AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC FROM EXTENDED SERVICE PLAN SAID HE COULD FIND NO ROAD HAZARD CONDITIONS THAT COULD CAUSE THIS WOBBLE. THIS WAS MORE LIKELY CAUSED WHEN THE RIM WAS MANUFACTURED. THIS HAPPENED WHEN DRIVING AT 40 MPH, AND THEN AGAIN AT 80 MPH. IT IS MORE PREVALENT AT 40 MPH, AND IN A CURVE OR TURN. THE HANDLE BARS WILL ACTUALLY WOBBLE. ALSO, ALMOST LIKE …

Recall history

3 distinct campaigns affect this selection. Announcement dates below are different from vehicle model years. A campaign may cover multiple years.

04V573000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Antilock/Traction Control/Electronic Limited Slip:Abs Warning Light

Reported: 2004-12-06 (December 6, 2004)

CERTAIN POLICE MOTORCYCLES WERE BUILT WITH A DEFECTIVE WIRING HARNESS. THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS ) IS WIRED THROUGH THE SAME FUSE CIRCUIT AS THE ABS MALFUNCTION WARNING LIGHT.

Consequence: THE OPERATOR OF THE MOTORCYCLE WOULD LOSE POWER TO THE ABS WARNING LIGHT AT THE SAME TIME HE LOSES POWER TO THE ABS BRAKE SYSTEM IF THIS PARTICULAR FUSE WOULD BLOW. THE WARNING LIGHT WOULD NOT ILLUMINATE DUE TO THE LOSS OF ELECTRICAL POWER TO THE MOTORCYCLE AND THE OPERATOR MIGHT NOT BE AWARE THAT THE ABS BRAKES WERE NOT FUNCTIONAL. THE GAUGES ARE ALSO WIRED THROUGH THIS FUSE CIRCUIT AND, SHOULD THIS FUSE FLOW, WOULD ALSO CEASE TO FUNCTION.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE WIRING HARNESS. THE RECALL BEGAN DECEMBER 27, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT HARLEY-DAVIDSON AT 1-414-343-4056.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
05V293000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Antilock/Traction Control/Electronic Limited Slip

Reported: 2005-06-21 (June 21, 2005)

ON CERTAIN POLICE AND ESCORT MOTORCYCLES, THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS) LINES MAY HAVE BEEN REVERSED DURING INSTALLATION PROCEDURES.

Consequence: THIS COULD CAUSE THE FRONT BRAKE TO LOCK UP IF AN ABS EVENT IS TRIGGERED, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH,

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND RE-ROUTE THE ABS BRAKE LINES FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON JUNE 24, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HARLEY DAVIDSON AT 1-414-343-4056.

NHTSA campaign record ↗
08V090000 · Service Brakes, Hydraulic:Antilock/Traction Control/Electronic Limited Slip

Reported: 2008-02-27 (February 27, 2008)

HARLEY-DAVIDSON IS RECALLING 5,947 MY 2005-2007 FLHP, FLHPI, FLHTP, FLHTPI, FLHPE AND FLHPEI POLICE AND ESCORT MOTORCYCLES EQUIPPED WITH ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEMS (ABS). INCONSISTENCIES IN THE ROUTING OF THE BRAKE LINES CAN CAUSE ABRASION OF THE BRAKE LINES AND HOSES. IN SOME CASES, THIS CONDITION HAS CAUSED BRAKE FLUID LEAKS.

Consequence: LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID COULD LEAD TO LOSS OF BRAKE FUNCTION, WHICH COULD LEAD TO A CRASH RESULTING IN INJURY OR DEATH.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE THE BRAKE LINES, IF NECESSARY. BRAKE LINE RETENTION AND CLUTCH CABLE POSITIONING DEVICES WILL ALSO BE INSTALLED TO PREVENT FUTURE ABRASION TO THE BRAKE LINES. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 29, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HARLEY-DAVIDSON AT 1-414-342-4680.

I'M NOT SURE IF THIS IS THE RIGHT SECTION TO POST THIS, BUT I'LL TRY IT ANY WAY. I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM HARLEY-DAVIDSON DATED 3/11/08. IT WAS ABOUT A RECALL CONCERNING ABS BRAKES. I MADE AN APPOINTMENT FOR THE FOLLOWING MONTH 4/12/08. I TOOK THE BIKE IN AND WAS TOLD THAT THE PARTS WERE ON BACK ORDER. ON 4/25/08 I CALLED HARLEY DAVIDSON [phone removed] AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY WERE WAITING ON A VENDOR FOR PARTS TO FIX THE PROBLEM ,AND THEY HAD NO ESTIMATED TIME OF ARRIVAL FOR THE PARTS. IT HAS BEEN TWO MONTHS SINCE I RECEIVED THE RECALL LETTER…

WHILE OPERATING MOTORCYCLE ON A CITY ROAD THE ENGINE STARTED TO MAKE A GROWLING NOISE AND CAUSED A LOSS OF POWER. I AM GLAD I WAS NOT ON AN INTERSTAE HIWAY PERFORMING A TURN AS THE LOSS OF POWER SURLEY WOULD HAVE BEEN A FATALITY. THE PROBLEM IS OCCURING ON ENOUGH HD THAT A SERVICE BULLITIEN HAS BEEN ISSUED BUT HD WILL NOT DO THE UPGRADE UNTILL FAILURE DOES OCCUR. IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE A FATALITY DOES OCCUR.*AK

THE CLEVE-BLOC ASSEMBLIES USED IN THE 1999 YEAR MODEL HARLEY DAVIDSON TOURING BIKES CAN NOT HANDLE THE STRESS OUT ON THEM IN NORMAL RIDING WITHOUT FLEXING AND ALLOWING REAR SWINGARM MOVEMENT FROM SIDE TO SIDE. ON LATER YEAR MODELS, HD HAS USED A SOLID ASSEMBLY DUE TO THE EARLIER YEARS HAVING FAILURE ISSUES FROM THE SILICON LEAKING OUT. *NM

THE DESIGN OF THIS MOTORCYCLES FRAME LEAVES THE POTENTIAL FOR THE OPERATOR TO LOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE LEADING TO A CRASH THAT WILL INJURE SELF OR MAY EVEN LEAD TO DEATH. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE SWING ARM FOR THE REAR SUSPENSION IS MOUNTED TO THE TRANSMISSION/ENGINE ASSEMBLY. THERE ARE ONLY TWO MOTOR MOUNTS HOLD THIS ASSEMBLY IN PLACE AGAINST SIDE TO SIDE MOVEMENT AND THEY ARE FAR FROM THE MOUNT POINT. WHAT HAPPENS IS THAT THE FORCES APPLIED TO THE REAR WHEEL IN LEANING THROUGH A CORNER, RIDING ON UNEVEN SURFACES, OR EVEN RIDING IN WINDY SI…

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.

Equal-age model-year comparison

Model-wide cumulative reports during the first three or five calendar years, starting with the model year (age 0). Only fully elapsed windows are compared.
