WHILE RIDING MOTORCYCLE ON HIGHWAY, LET REAR OUTER SPOKE ON REAR TIRE BREAKS SUDDENLY AND CATASTROPHICALLY ONCE AT 6200 MILE, SECOND AT 23,000 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. FIRST BROKEN SPOKE DAMAGES BRAKE FLUID HOSE AND REAR WHEEL RIM. SECOND BROKEN SPOKE CAUSES IMMEDIATE FLAT TIRE SENDING BIKE ALMOST OUT OF CONTROL AT 60+ MPH. BROKEN SPOKE IN THE REAR WHEEL OF MY 2001 TRIUMPH BONNEVILLE. THE BIKE HAS BEEN EXTREMELY WELL MAINTAINED, AND NEVER ABUSED. I WOULD NOT BE CONCERNED IF SO MANY OTHER OWNERS HAVE NOT HAD THE SAME EXPERIENCE OF REAR WHEEL SPOKE BREAKAGE. CONSIDERING THERE ARE ONLY 2 WHEELS ON A MOTORCYCLE, AND ONE HAS A HISTORY SPOKE BREAKAGE, THIS IS A DANGEROUS SITUATION WAITING TO HAPPEN. THANKS, PHIL. *JB

I WAS RIDING THE MOTORCYCLE TO WORK IN THE CITY, WHEN IT STARTED TO RAIN. AFTER A FEW MINUTES, THE INSTRUMENTS TURNED OFF. A FEW MINUTES LATER, THE BIKE STALLED AND WOULD NOT RE-START. MY MECHANIC FOUND WATER IN THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER AND SPECIFIED THAT THE FUEL PUMP CONTROLS PASS THROUGH THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, AND THAT THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER HAD BEEN "BURNED OUT". I HAVE PURCHASED A NEW INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FROM THE MANUFACTURER FOR $690, IN ADDITION TO THE LABOR OF FINDING THE ISSUE AND REPLACING PART.

Emerging complaint spikes

Complete months in the latest six months with at least 10 complaints, at least twice the preceding 12-month average, and at least three square-root deviations above that average.

This is a descriptive screening rule, not a statistical defect finding. Publicity and reporting changes can increase submissions.

No complete months meet the spike thresholds for this selection.
